About Abraka
Abraka, an Urhobo town in Ethiope East, is where the Ethiope River is at its clearest. The river rises at Umuaja and flows west towards Sapele, and along this stretch the water is clear enough to see the sandy bottom from the bank.
It is also a university town: the main campus of Delta State University is here, so the town fills up in term time. At Easter the Abraka Turf and Country Club hosts an international polo tournament, and its grounds offer golf, tennis, horse riding and canoeing.
Most visitors come for the river itself: the beaches and resorts along the bank, boat rides and a swim. Some stretches are off limits for swimming, so follow the signs and ask locally.
