What to buy
Yams, spices, smoked fish and fresh produce, fabric and clothing, and just about everything else. More than a thousand traders work here, prices are generally lower than in the shops, and bargaining is normal.
Nkwo is one of the four days of the traditional Igbo market week, which is why the big market day comes round every fourth day.
Old market, new market
Part of the market, including the livestock section, was destroyed by fire in May 2020. It has since been rebuilt as a modern market, and you will sometimes hear it called the Asaba Modern Market.
Tips
Go on Nkwo day for the full market and early in the day for the best produce. Bring cash, bargain politely, and keep your valuables close in the crowds. Ask before you photograph traders or their stalls.
