The stadium
Formerly the Asaba Township Stadium, it was rebuilt and renamed after Stephen Keshi, who captained Nigeria as a player and later coached the Super Eagles to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title. Keshi died in 2016. His hometown, Illah, is just north of Asaba in Oshimili North.
The rebuilt stadium hosted the African Championships in Athletics from 1 to 5 August 2018, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo formally commissioned it on 19 November 2018.
